Before Kohl’s Department Stores (NYSE: KSS) opened 37 new stores
today - including 35 stores located in the Western states of
California, Nevada, Texas and Utah - Kohl’s volunteers had already
shown their commitment to those local communities by volunteering.
Through its company-wide volunteer program, Kohl’s A-Team, Kohl’s
expects to donate $1 million in corporate grants and more than
35,000 volunteer hours in and around these communities in the
West.
The A-Team volunteer program is part of Kohl’s overall
philanthropic platform, Kohl’s Cares for Kids®, which is committed
to supporting children’s health and education initiatives
nationwide. Since 2000, Kohl’s raised more than $126 million
through its Kohl's Cares for Kids® program. Last year marked Kohl’s
most successful year for its A-Team volunteer program, donating
more than $5.6 million to support youth-focused charities when more
than 64,000 associates volunteered more than 216,000 hours of their
time. This year, with increased efforts in the West and across the
country, the company is on course to double its A-Team efforts from
last year. This increased giving comes at a time when more than
half of corporations are reporting declines in charitable
giving.*
“Kohl’s is dedicated to providing support for our communities
where our customers and associates live and do business. To show
our commitment to community partnership, we start volunteering with
nonprofit organizations around our new stores even before we open
them,” said Julie Gardner, executive vice president and chief
marketing officer for Kohl’s Department Stores. “We have a history
of giving and feel fortunate to be able to continue to give back at
a significant level – and even escalate our volunteer efforts
during this tough economy. As a family-focused, value-oriented
company, we remain committed to making a meaningful difference and
strengthening our communities.”
Kohl’s volunteers support a range of youth-focused organizations
such as children’s hospitals and local schools. Kohl’s A-Team
events have included giving away backpacks with school supplies to
deserving children, hosting a “day of fun” for patients at
children’s hospitals and volunteering at a camp for homeless
kids.
Kohl’s stores nationwide participate in A-Team events and
encourage associates to volunteer at local youth-focused
nonprofits. Kohl’s then matches volunteer efforts with $500 grants
to the nonprofit organization.
