Tech stocks slowly came to life Monday, with many bellwethers on
rise to start off what was expected to be a largely quiet week for
the sector.
Among the advancers were Dell Inc. (DELL), Microsoft Corp.
(MSFT), Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ), Yahoo Inc. (YHOO) and Texas
Instruments Inc. (TXN).
The Nasdaq Composite Index (RIXF), which stumbled out of the
gate, rose almost 12 points to 2,280. The Philadelphia
Semiconductor Index (SOX) and the Morgan Stanley High Tech 35 Index
(MSH) were each just below their breakeven lines.
Declines came from Apple Inc. (AAPL), Oracle Corp. (ORCL), IBM
Corp. (IBM), Intel Corp. (INTC) and Google Inc. (GOOG).
The tech sector still awaited a few remaining earnings reports.
Electronics contract manufacturer Sanmina-SCI Corp. (SANM) was
scheduled to deliver its third-quarter results after Monday's
market close, while Lexmark International (LXK) reports
second-quarter results before the market opens Tuesday and Broadcom
Corp. does the same after Tuesday's close. Motorola Inc. (MOT) has
its second-quarter report slated for before Thursday's market
open.
