Comex copper futures set a fresh record for trading volume Thursday, exchange-operator CME Group Inc. (CME) said.

The benchmark 25,000-pound copper-futures contract changed hands 109,426 times, surpassing the previous trading-volume record of 98,079 contracts set on Aug. 5, 2011, CME said Friday.

Thursday's trading-volume peak came as Comex copper prices roared to a five-month high, settling trade at $3.9785 a pound.

By contrast, the previous record was set during a sharp pullback in copper prices.

Copper for March delivery, the most-actively traded contract, was recently down 10.90 cents, or 2.7%, at $3.8695 a pound.
