Cintas Corporation (NASDAQ: CTAS), a world leader in corporate identify uniforms, announced it has won a 2012 UNIVATOR Award for its innovative, corporate-wide uniform redesign for McDonald’s Canada. Sponsored by UniformMarket News, the UNIVATOR Awards recognize forward-thinking companies that have developed innovative apparel programs, products and strategies over the past year. One of only eight companies to win a 2012 UNIVATOR Award, Cintas won in the “Uniform Program Innovation” category.

“A household name in the uniform industry, Cintas never ceases to deliver uniforms that make a positive, high impact statement about their customers’ business,” said Rick Levine, editor at UniformMarket News. “The McDonald’s Canada uniforms perfectly accent the restaurants’ stylish interiors, outgoing employees and dedication to sustainability.”

Created as part of a multi-year $1 billion makeover to modernize the majority of its more than 1,400 McDonald’s restaurants in Canada, the new uniforms were designed to complement the restaurants’ new contemporary interiors, which feature flat screen televisions, fireplaces and comfortable seating. To give the restaurants a more inviting and current look, Fourmy exchanged the traditional polo for a modern “wedge” polo and paired sleek, black silhouettes with small splashes of color. Reflective piping in crew uniforms was added to match the stainless steel used within all interiors and provide visibility at night for employee safety.

“We challenged Cintas to create uniforms that would not only enhance our sustainability initiatives – as well as the new look and feel of our restaurants – but also give staff apparel they want to wear to work,” said Len Jillard, Chief People Officer, McDonald’s Canada. “Our managers and crew are thrilled with the redesign, and that feeling of pride is further validated by this award.”

To accommodate McDonald’s request for improved sustainability, Cintas used environmentally-friendly fabrics, such as recycled polyester and renewable bamboo fibers, to create the uniforms. In addition, many of the garments can be returned to Cintas at the end of their wearable lives to be “down cycled,” a process which transforms the uniforms into other usable fabrics to help reduce landfill waste.

“Winning a UNIVATOR award is a great honor,” said Helen Loader, President of Fourmy. “We’re pleased to receive recognition for our work and would like to also recognize and thank Scott Gibson of McDonald’s Canada and Designer Tracey Macaskill for their collaborative and valued contributions.”
