In honor of Financial Literacy Month in April, Cintas Corporation (NASDAQ: CTAS), the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) and Equifax, today announced that submissions are open for the inaugural “Shred Your Debt” contest. U.S. citizens 18 years and older can enter for a chance to win $2,000 to pay down their debt and a trip to Atlanta to receive financial coaching from a nationally recognized personal finance expert.

To enter, contestants must describe their financial situation, why they deserve to win and submit an optional image that demonstrates their current or ideal financial state. Contestants are also required to pledge financial responsibility to themselves before entering. Entries must be received by 5 p.m. Eastern on April 25, and can be submitted at www.cintas.com/shredyourdebt.

“Many Americans are struggling to dig themselves out of credit card debt,” said Gail Cunningham, spokesperson for the NFCC. “We are excited to partner with Cintas and Equifax to provide one lucky winner with the prize package, educational resources and tools to help them begin their journey to becoming debt free.”

A panel of judges from Cintas Document Management, the NFCC and Equifax will select the grand prize winner. The prize package includes two roundtrip airfare tickets and a two-night stay in Atlanta. To ensure long-term success, the winner will also receive free additional financial counseling sessions from an NFCC Member Agency and Equifax’s Debt Wise™ product, a do-it-yourself resource that enables users to prioritize their bills and save money on interest to get out of debt faster.

In addition to the contest, Cintas, the NFCC and Equifax will host several “Shred Your Debt” events throughout the country to enable community members to securely shred personal documents such as credit cards, bill statements or even their worst purchase as a demonstration of their commitment to become debt free. One of Cintas’ secure, mobile shredding trucks will be on-site to safely destroy documents using its SmartShred™ process. All of the shredded paper will then be recycled into secondary paper products such as paper towels and tissue to help protect natural resources.

“Financial Literacy Month is a great time for consumers to securely shred confidential documents no longer needed,” said Karen Carnahan, President and COO of Cintas Document Management. “We are pleased to partner with the NFCC and Equifax to help consumers across the nation protect their personal information and keep it out of the wrong hands.”

The kick-off shred event will be held in Wilmington, N.C., on Saturday, April 30. According to an Equifax report, residents of Wilmington have the highest percentage of the average credit card debt relative to income in the country. Additional event locations will also be announced on April 30. At each event, participants will have the chance to win $100 toward paying off their debt, financial coaching sessions from the NFCC, the Equifax’s Debt Wise™ product and a copy of the book Debt Free for Life by Equifax’s David Bach.
