The auto industry's chief lobbyist in Washington has resigned to take a similar post in another industry.

Dave McCurdy, president and chief executive of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, told his staff of his intention to leave last week, according to officials at two of the association's members. An alliance spokeswoman confirmed the plans late Monday.

The former U.S. congressman from Oklahoma joined the group in February 2007.

As head of the industry's main trade group, McCurdy has been the auto makers' chief representative in talks with lawmakers and White House officials on policies affecting the industry. He was a leading figure in talks last year that led to a landmark agreement among the industry, California and the Obama administration that set stringent new fuel-efficiency standards.

The alliance represents the three Detroit auto makers--General Motors Co. (GM), Ford Motor Co. (F) and Chrysler Group LLC--as well as most of the major foreign auto makers, including Toyota Motor Corp. (TM) and Nissan Motor Co. (NSANY).
