Foodfest
Interternational 2000 (FDFT) is a holding
company that has acquired companies in the beverage industry.
They are targeting acquisitions of beverage companies that have
growth and income potential. On of these businesses is the
Puritan Street Beverages located in San Diego California and has a
five beer line-up and is marketing this brand to independent
distributors. Some of the brands include Hammered Zebra which
is a golden cream ale with a smooth body and a soft mouth
feel.

Infused Market
Place Represents Future Growth
Constellation Brands (STZ) and its acquisition and joint venture
story is well known. Just recently they announce a
joint venture with Moa Brewing Co., the largest
New Zealand owned brewer called MoBev. The joint
venture will be run by CEO Geoff Ross and he plans to create a
“beverage portfolio and servicing model that delivers benefits to
both customers and consumers. Craft beer is a powerful
contributor of alcohol-beverage growth right now.”
Belgian brewer Blue Moon Taking the THC Plunge
A beer industry heavyweight is essentially attempting to chart the
same path for ale. Keith Villa, who created the massively popular
Belgian wit-inspired ale Blue Moon, is stepping
out of retirement to focus on more THC-laden beer pursuits through
a new company named Ceria Beverages.
The company’s website
states the goal of creating a line of non-alcoholic craft beers
infused with THC. So essentially, a weed-infused beverage that
tastes, but doesn't necessarily act, like beer, that gets you high
like weed.
To this end, the company
is partnering with Colorado cannabis research company
Ebbu to take advantage of its researched,
lab-engineered cannabinoid compounds that tout predictable sensory
effects, like “chill,” “bliss” and “energy.”
Villa’s initial plan is to
brew three types of beer—with a light, regular and full bodied ale,
respectively—just as any artisan brewer would. Then they’re going
to take out all the alcohol and add the cannabinoids. So now we’re
getting a THC-beer that isn’t really, actually, a beer at all, much
like the THC-wine that wasn’t really a wine. It’s hard to know
whether we’re actually getting closer to seeing the dream of a two
bird-killing beer-THC hybrid stone. Or just repackaging the same
THC punch in drinks with new guises.
Landmark Investment
The last significant investment Constellation brands
made was a 9.9% minority stake in the $2 billion Canadian medical
marijuana company called Canopy Growth. This transaction
represents a $191 million investment with an option of purchasing
additional shares in the future. This gives Constellation
Brands a great toehold in a market that could be on the verge of
cannabis legalization in the near future. More importantly,
this represents the shift brewers are making in a desperate attempt
to reach their customers. According to Cannabiz Consumer Group 27%
of beer drinkers said they’ve already substituted cannabis for
beer. Well respected Cowen analyst Vivien Azer downgraded the entire sector last year because “we
believe alcohol could be under pressure for the next decade, based
on our data analysis covering 80 years of alcohol and 35 years of
cannabis incidence in the US.” The team went on to comment
that “consumer surveys suggest 80% of consumers reduce their
alcohol consumption with cannabis in the mix.” Brewers need a
way to stop the migration and infused drinks may very well
represent the solution.

Craftbeer is
booming and brewers are creatively infusing
Craft beer is booming, but that's nothing new. Competition is
fierce, and many new brewers just can't seem to break into the
market. The beer can be great but that no longer seems to be
enough. Many craft brewers today religiously follow the German
Purity Law of beer-making which allows for the use of only water,
barley, hops, and yeast in beer production. As the craft beer
industry booms, however, infusing beer with alternative ingredients
is becoming more common, as breweries attempt to stand
out.
The innovative project by
CERIA is just one of many seeking to create unique expressions by
infusing unusual ingredients into beer. Strange Days Brewing in
Kansas was recently under the spotlight, with their culinary
infused brews. Expressions are brewed with rice, ginger, coffee, or
honey, all to provide drinkers with new and exciting
experiences. Across the pond, Swedish brewing company,
Omnipollo, enjoys a huge, fanatic fan base which lines-up for hours
to taste the team's latest brew. Their unique approach to brewing,
with limited releases encompassing a large variety of ingredients,
has quickly made them one of the most popular small brewers in
Europe. Caramel sauce, chocolate, ice-cream, peanut butter. Their
beers often sound like options from a dessert menu. Mad Science
Brewing in Maryland takes a more natural approach, offering infused
versions of their beers using fresh fruit, vegetables, and hops
from the brewery farm.
Investment Summary
It’s not hard to connect that dots that this company is going to
capitalizes on the growth of the Marijuana business. The
recent appearance of the website this month after years of being
offline signals to investors that something is brewing under the
surface. The leading marketer of wine and beer has spent
close to $200 million just to make sure its gets a food hold in the
booming Marijuana market in Canada and have some exposure to
THC. Marijuana is already infused in many products and a
booming business especially in California. It’s not a hard
stretch to see that this company is going to be turned into a
marijuana company with a twist. If they can infuse wine with
Marijuana there is no reason to think beer won’t be next.
