JACKSON, Mich., June 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Customer participation in Consumers Energy's Green Generation program has doubled in the past ten weeks to 2,500 enrollments. The program, one of the largest renewable energy efforts in Michigan, was launched last fall following approval by the Michigan Public Service Commission. "An increasing number of customers are choosing to support 'made in Michigan' renewable energy by their voluntary enrollment in the Green Generation program," said Sue Swan, vice president of customer operations for Consumers Energy. "We and our renewable energy suppliers appreciate the growing customer support for expanding Michigan-based green power sources." Since the October 1 launch of Green Generation, suppliers have to-date produced more than 10 million kilowatt-hours of new renewable energy, enough to provide the annual power needs of approximately 1,200 homes. That number will grow as more renewable energy projects begin production. The Green Generation program offers Consumers Energy's 1.8 million statewide electric customers an opportunity to support renewable energy by voluntarily enrolling in the program and paying a small premium. Payment options range from purchasing a "green block" of power for as little as $2.50 per month, to matching current monthly usage for approximately $12 - $14 per month. Information on the Green Generation program is available at http://www.consumersenergy.com/ . To support the Green Generation program, Consumers Energy has entered into electricity supply contracts with seven new independent renewable energy projects. Approximately 75 percent of the electric energy from the new projects will come from wind generation, including the Noble Environmental Power wind farm under construction in Michigan's Huron County. The remaining 25 percent of energy for the program is from landfill gas facilities. All of the projects are located in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy, provides natural gas and electricity to nearly 6.5 million of Michigan's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
