Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI) was recently honored by the Aquarion Water Company for its protection of Connecticut’s natural resources through the company’s environmental program which focuses on its process to remanufacture equipment, also known as green machines.

The company received the Aquarion Environmental Champion Large Business Award from the Aquarion Water Company, which was presented by Senator Richard Blumenthal, at a recent ceremony held at the Bridgeport Zoo. Pitney Bowes was among four honorees, with other winners in the adult, youth and non-profit organization categories.

“Environmental responsibility is an important part of our effort to provide sustainable value to customers and shareholders,” said Robbie Narcisse, vice president global ethics and business practices, Pitney Bowes Inc. “Our environmental programs conserve energy, conserve raw materials, save landfill space and reduce air pollution, and we are pleased to be recognized by the Aquarion Water Company for our efforts.”

In 2011, the company’s sales of remanufactured products rose 64 percent over 2010. Equipment remanufacture diverted 371,127 pounds of waste from recycling to reuse in 2011. In addition, parts reuse significantly reduced the amount of raw materials and energy needed to manufacture new equipment. Based on Environmental Protection Agency estimates, the environmental savings are equivalent to:

  • Removing 1,714 passenger vehicles from the road;
  • CO2 emissions from 979,902 gallons of gasoline consumed;
  • CO2 emissions from the electricity use of 1,090 homes for one year;
  • Carbon sequestered by 224,121 tree seedlings grown for 10 years.

“We are pleased to honor Pitney Bowes for their leadership and commitment to protecting our natural resources,” said Charles V. Firlotte, president and CEO of Aquarion Water Company. "The environmental, health and financial benefits to the state of Connecticut are countless, and we’re delighted to spotlight Pitney Bowes’ efforts.”

Pitney Bowes’s environmental initiatives, along with many other programs, are detailed in the company’s online Corporate Responsibility report, available here.
