International stocks trading in New York closed lower on Tuesday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts edged down 0.5% to 133.48. The European index slipped 0.7% to 124.62. The Asian index lost 0.2% to 164.12. The Latin American index shed 1% to 168.22, while the emerging-markets index declined 0.4% to 275.20.

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. was among those whose ADRs traded actively.

The medicine producer and developer rose 2% after it and Abbvie Inc.'s Allergan unit reached an agreement with the city and county of San Francisco that settles claims that the companies fueled a surge of opioid-related addiction and overdose in San Francisco.

Banco Santander SA tumbled 5.8%, part of a broader downturn among Spanish banks, after the country's government proposed new taxes on large financial firms as part of an effort to deal with spiraling energy prices.
