Leonardo SpA (LDO.MI) said Wednesday it will act as the lead contractor in a 3 billion-euro ($3.71 billion) helicopter supply deal for the Qatari Ministry of Defense.

Qatar will purchase 28 NH90 military helicopters, of which 16 will be tailored for land operations and 12 for naval missions, Leonardo said.

The Italian defense-and-aviation company is the lead contractor for all the aircraft and will be responsible for assembly, delivery and support of the 12 helicopters dedicated to naval applications, it said.

Airbus SE (AIR.FR) will assemble the other 16 helicopters, Leonardo said.

The company expects to begin delivering the aircraft in 2022 and said there is scope for the contract to be expanded in future.

The NH90 helicopter program is managed by NHIndustries, a joint venture between Leonardo, Airbus, and Fokker.
