State Street Global Markets, the investment research and trading arm of State Street Corporation (NYSE: STT), today announced the launch of an online media research center that will provide timely access to select economic indicators including inflation indices for the US and Argentina and global investor confidence.

The new website will function as a media resource for direct access to the State Street PriceStats Inflation Indices for the United States and Argentina, available on a daily basis as well as State Street’s monthly Investor Confidence Index for North America, Asia-Pacific and Europe. The Argentina Index was the inaugural country specific inflation indicator developed by PriceStats in 2007; and beginning on February 25th, the Economist magazine began incorporating it into their weekly summary of country economic statistics in place of the Argentine government’s official Consumer Price Index (CPI) releases. The US Inflation index has also proven to anticipate short-term trends in inflation.

“We are pleased to make these additional fact-based indicators of inflation and investor behavior available to the media,” said Mark Snyder, executive vice president and head of State Street Global Markets’ Sales & Trading and Research team. “The new website offers a snapshot of the many proprietary insights and practical portfolio management tools that our research partnership provides to our global client base.”

The website will also include periodic updates of research insights from State Street Associates, State Street Global Markets’ research partnership with renowned academics. For more than a decade, State Street’s research partnership has brought together the best of finance theory with a deep understanding of investment issues. State Street Global Markets’ research strategists will also contribute regular content and commentary based on relevant market factors and events.

“The launch of State Street’s new media research center will provide access to a selection of our proprietary indicators and indices, offering keen insights into economic trends and measures of market sentiment,” said Jessica Donohue, senior managing director and head of State Street Associates. “Measuring inflation is increasingly important to investors because it impacts their portfolios across asset classes. There has been an overwhelming amount of interest in the State Street PriceStats Inflation Indices for the US, as PriceStats’ research has proven that online prices can be successfully used to measure trends. This drove our decision to highlight the inflation index for the US alongside the inaugural inflation index for Argentina and our Investor Confidence Index.”

The State Street PriceStats Inflation Series, grounded in the extensive body of research of MIT professors Alberto Cavallo and Roberto Rigobon and their Billion Prices Project at MIT, provides high-frequency global inflation indices allowing for the clearest available insights into global inflation trends. Generated using software that scans the underlying code on public websites to capture the full array of products sold by online retailers, the technology monitors price fluctuations on approximately five million items sold by hundreds of online retailers in more than 70 countries.

The State Street Investor Confidence Index, developed by Harvard University professor Kenneth Froot and Paul O’Connell of State Street Associates, measures investor confidence and determines changes in investor risk appetite that critically affects economic and financial fluctuations of the business cycle. State Street’s Investor Confidence Index uses the aggregated portfolios of sophisticated investors and measures confidence directly and quantitatively by assessing the changes in holdings of risky assets across asset classes and more than 45 countries.
