Regulators granted Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. (PEG) renewed licenses for two of its nuclear reactors in New Jersey, saying the plant where they are located is safe despite renewed public concern after the Fukushima Daiichi disaster in Japan.

Both units at PSEG's Salem Nuclear Generating Station received renewals for 20 more years. The Salem plant's two pressurized-water reactors are in southern New Jersey, about 18 miles south of Wilmington, Del. The licenses for Units 1 and 2 will expire in 2036 and 2040, respectively.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said lessons learned from meltdowns in Japan following that country's March earthquake will apply to the agency's future recommendations for Salem and other U.S. plants. A task force will deliver its near-term report to the NRC on July 12, while a longer-term review's report is expected in about six months.

PSEG shares were off 0.4% at $32.51 after-hours Thursday after gaining 1.2% during the session. The stock has climbed 4.2% over the past 12 months.
