Santos Ltd. (STO.AU) and French utility GDF Suez SA (GSZ.FR) said Monday they expect to decide in 2014 whether to invest in the Bonaparte liquefied natural gas project offshore northern Australia.

The project aims to produce 2 million metric tons of LNG annually from 2018 by tapping three gas fields in the Timor Sea, the companies said in a joint statement.

Early design and engineering work on Bonaparte LNG, which is 60% owned by GDF Suez and 40% by Santos, will be carried out by Paris-based Doris Engineering, and Granherne, a unit of KBR Inc. (KBR).
