Harris Corporation’s John Shipley Honored by U.S. National Reconnaissance Office with Prestigious ‘Pioneer Award’

John Shipley, Ph.D., senior scientist for the Space Systems
business of Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), has received the
prestigious U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) Pioneer
Award. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant
contributions to the discipline of national reconnaissance. It was
presented to Dr. Shipley February 3 during a special ceremony at
NRO headquarters in Chantilly, Virginia.
The NRO recognized Dr. Shipley because he “…pioneered the
concept development, architectural approach, and initial system
definition that led to the successful development of a
revolutionary NRO collection asset. His unique beam-forming design
led to proven on-orbit performance and critical collections that
have exceeded expectations.”
Dr. Shipley joined Harris in 1979. During his career, he has
received numerous awards and holds 10 patents. In 2000, he was
named a Harris Fellow – the company’s highest recognition for
engineering achievement. Dr. Shipley is a Licensed Professional
Engineer in the state of Florida. He received his bachelor’s,
master’s and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from the
Georgia Institute of Technology.
