News Corp. (NWSA, NWS) Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey said Wednesday carriage of National Football League games is a "double-edged sword" for Fox and other TV networks, since it draws such large male audiences, but incurs ever-increasing costs. Speaking at the UBS Global Media Conference in New York, Carey said that given these costs, it's important for networks to work with cable, satellite and fiber providers to make sure there is "added value" that justifies any costs that may eventually get passed on to consumers. At the same time, Carey added, the networks are providing highly important content that the cable operators use to attract subscribers, and that has to be reflected in the fees those networks charge for the retransmission of their signals. Fox, Comcast Corp.'s (CMCSA, CMCSK) NBC and CBS Corp.'s (CBS) CBS are reportedly close to an eight-year extension of their deals with the NFL for $3.2 billion per year.
