Air Products Names Winners of Faculty Excellence Awards; Company
Recognizes Outstanding, Emerging University Researchers LEHIGH
VALLEY, Pa., July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Air Products has named the
winners of its inaugural Faculty Excellence Awards, a program
designed to recognize outstanding, emerging faculty in technology
areas strategic to the company's long-term growth. The two winners,
Dr. Judy Hoyt of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Dr.
Jinbo Hu of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese
Academy of Sciences, will each receive a $30,000 unrestricted gift
for their institutions to further their research - Dr. Hoyt for
semiconductor processing and Dr. Hu for organofluorine chemistry
and advanced materials. "Air Products is pleased and honored to
recognize and support the outstanding work and contributions of Dr.
Judy Hoyt and Dr. Jinbo Hu," said Miles Drake, Air Products vice
president and chief technology officer. "We believe that these
scientists are developing the technology and training future
scientists to support the products of the future." The two winners
of the Faculty Excellence Awards were selected from 12 nominees by
Air Products' Technology Board, comprised of senior scientists and
engineers across the company. Nominations were open globally to
emerging faculty having six years or less in a faculty position and
conducting research in one of four technology areas: material
science (fluorine chemistry, fuel cell, organic electronics and
electronic materials); process synthesis; CO2 separation
technologies; and hydrogen production technologies. Candidates
could be nominated by any member of the Air Products technical
community. Dr. Hoyt earned a B.S. in Physics and Applied
Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1981.
From 1988 to 1999, she served as a Research Associate and Senior
Research Scientist at Stanford University, where she received a
Ph.D. in Applied Physics in 1988. At Stanford, Dr. Hoyt developed
the first proof of concept that strain engineering in
semiconductors can significantly improve device performance, a
technique that is now widely applied in the semiconductor industry.
Dr. Hoyt is currently studying new processes and materials for
silicone device fabrication. She has authored numerous articles
that have been published in peer-reviewed journals, as well as
authored and contributed to scientific books. Dr. Hu earned his
B.S. in Chemistry from Hangzhou University, Hangzhou, China, in
1994. In 1997, he received an M.S. in Chemistry from Shanghai
Institute of Metallurgy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai,
China. Dr. Hu studied in the United States at the University of
Southern California from 1997 to 2005, earning a Ph.D. in Chemistry
in 2002 and studying as a Postdoctoral Fellow from 2002 to 2005.
Dr. Hu is a talented and prolific organofluorine chemist. His
achievements include several highly-distinguished awards and
honors, including a recent selection as one of the "Hundreds-
Talent," a program sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences to
support outstanding young Chinese scientists, as well as numerous
published articles in peer-reviewed journals and several recognized
patents. Air Products (NYSE:APD) serves customers in technology,
