The Dow was up about three percent, while the Nasdaq and S&P 500 both gained nine percent. Bonds were higher, as the benchmark 10 year note added three percent before dividends, but the big winner was the Russell 2000 small cap index as it soared 17 percent. The dollar lost seven percent, gold added five percent and oil saw massive gains of 33 percent. The first two economic reports of the year come out at 10:00 a.m. The December ISM Index is expected to come in at 58.5, while November construction spending should increase to 0.4 percent. Earnings are light this week, but they will start to pick up real soon as earnings season is right around the corner. Remember January is a very good indicator for how the year will perform, as there have only been four instances since 1950 when it was an up month and the Dow was lower. Also the first five days predict what the year will be like nearly 90 percent of the time the past 52 years. All in all, we'll have a good clue as to what to expect in 2005 real soon.
