Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MSPD), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, today announced that Miranda Technologies has selected Mindspeed®’s M21170 288x288 asynchronous non-blocking crosspoint switch for its NVISION 8500 hybrid digital video/audio routers.

The M21170 device delivers 82,944 unique switching paths in a single, monolithic integrated circuit (IC). By quadrupling the core matrix as compared to earlier solutions, Mindspeed doubled available switching capacity, enabling users to route significantly higher numbers of serial data streams. With the M21170 solution, manufacturers can replace four cascaded 144x144 crosspoints with a single device for creating a 288x288 non-blocking matrix for a router's switching core. This significantly reduces the size, cost and complexity of large switchers, and has enabled Miranda to create a family of compact, cost-effective solutions for delivering multiple frame sizes for matrices up to 1152x1152.

“Prior to the availability of Mindspeed’s M21170, it was extremely challenging for us to offer the NVISION 8500 Hybrid routers. Nearly unmanageable layouts of cascaded 144x144 crosspoints and heavy power consumption needed to be addressed,” said Bob Hudelson, vice president of routers at Miranda. “The M21170 has saved power and space, while increasing signal integrity, enabling the NVISION 8500 Hybrid embedded audio routers to include increased functional density without increasing the size, and making it easier for our customers to migrate to new capabilities including 3 gigabits per second (Gbps) and audio processing.”

Mindspeed’s M21170 enables Miranda’s NVISION 8500 Hybrid routers to offer a highly streamlined, linear expansion path, which can yield significant savings in space and costs. For instance, 1152 x 1152 routing has traditionally required four routers, each 576x576, but the M21170 enables this capability to be packaged into just two routers, each 576x576 with 576 expansion outputs. Integrated active expansion eliminates the signal integrity losses attributable to external passive splitters and combiners.

“We are very pleased that Miranda has selected the M21170 for their breakthrough digital video/audio router family,” said Hasnain Bajwa, senior vice president and general manager of the high-performance analog (HPA) business unit at Mindspeed. “The M21170 crosspoint’s combination of unprecedented switching capacity, leading signal-conditioning technology, flexible multi-rate routing and switching capabilities, and low power consumption make it significantly easier for manufacturers to build larger, more capable multi-format standard definition (SD), high definition (HD), and 3Gbps switchers and routers, with smaller footprints and improved economics. Miranda’s NVISION 8500 Hybrid router family will help major broadcasters, service providers and video production companies meet explosive consumer demand for video programming that can be accessed anywhere and anytime.”

The M21170 delivers multi-rate routing and switching in a single device, with each switching path operating independently at any data rate of up to 3.2 gigabits per second (Gbps). Mindspeed’s proven signal-conditioning technology enables the M21170 crosspoint to compensate for signal losses that typically accumulate across the extended trace lengths of very large systems, and includes input equalization for multiple data rates and various trace lengths up to 40 inches, as well as output pre-emphasis. These and other M21170 features ideally suit the crosspoint device for a broad range of switching applications, including SD/HD/3G- Serial Digital Interface (SDI) routers for broadcast video and Optical Transport Network (OTN) switches for telecom service provider networks, both of which require very robust operation.

Mindspeed offers the industry's broadest portfolio of crosspoint devices, from 2x2 solutions to the industry’s first 288x288 non-blocking switch. The company’s crosspoints are part of a comprehensive video-broadcast product offering that also includes cable equalizers, reclockers, and cable drivers and signal conditioners that enable the development of highly sophisticated video broadcast equipment and OTN switches.
