Cintas Corporation (NASDAQ: CTAS) recently named aspiring fashion designer and housekeeper Joe Deese, from Hyatt Place Charlotte Airport in N.C., the clear winner of its 2011 “Design a Uniform” contest. Held in conjunction with International Housekeepers Week, Sept. 11 – 17, the contest challenged hospitality staff to design a housekeeping or environmental services (EVS) uniform for the chance to win a $500 gift card from Cintas.

“I’ve always enjoyed designing clothes, so the contest was a fun opportunity to apply my passion and hobby to the workplace,” said Deese. “I put a lot of effort into the uniform design, which combined practicality with aesthetics.”

Cintas selected Deese’s contest entry, one of several worthy submissions, for his enthusiastic and well-researched uniform design. To develop his creation, Deese spoke with housekeepers at the Hyatt to identify their uniform preferences—what features they liked and wanted to see added—and formulated his uniform idea according to their feedback. In addition to supplying sketches, Deese also sourced sample fabric to further bring the concept to life.

“Joe’s complete immersion in and dedication to the contest influenced the final decision from our fashion design and merchandising departments,” said Kristin Sharp, Director of Design and Merchandising at Cintas. “We are constantly thinking of ways to connect with our customers and get them involved in the uniform process, and this contest was an exciting way to generate feedback and engage hotel employees.”

Cintas Style Consultant Dale Pisarcik personally attended the hotel’s holiday party in December to congratulate Deese on his design achievement and present him with a framed letter of recognition and a $500 Cintas gift certificate.

Cintas is continually updating its uniform options for the hospitality industry with designs that are professional, stylish and functional. In 2011, the company added 67 new styles, colors and fits to its housekeeping and EVS product line, five of which were made with environmentally-friendly fabric.
