In recognition of American Heart Month, Cintas Corporation
(NASDAQ: CTAS) today released top tips for implementing an
automatic external defibrillator (AED) program. With sudden cardiac
arrest (SCA) as a leading cause of death claiming more than 250,000
victims each year, Cintas’ tips help organizations understand how
to maximize the life-saving benefits of an AED program.
“Sudden cardiac arrest affects people of all ages and degrees of
fitness,” said Bob Mitchell, Vice President, Emerging Business
Sales, Cintas. “While calling 911 and performing CPR are important
responses for bystanders, providing defibrillation within a few
minutes of SCA can mean the difference between life and death.
Choosing to implement an effective, clear AED program in any work
location, jobsite, school or public facility is critical to making
the commitment to saving lives.”
More than 160 lives have been saved with the help of the Cintas
ReviveR™ AEDs. To help organizations most effectively implement an
AED program, Cintas offers the following tips:
1)
Place the AED three minutes away from
populated areas: Companies should determine places where SCA
could most likely occur. Possible AED locations could include main
reception area, near elevators, cafeterias and on the walls of main
corridors. Responders should be able to quickly access the AED in
an unlocked location within three minutes of the incident’s
location
2)
Train all potential responders:
Companies should identify individuals who would be the likely
responders in the event of an SCA and explore customizable training
programs, like those available through Cintas, to suit their
particular needs. Potential responders include security personnel,
human resources and facility staff.
3)
Ensure local emergency medical services
(EMS) can locate the AED: Communicate the location of all AEDs
to local EMS workers in order to save critical minutes during an
emergency.
4)
Enlist a medical professional to
oversee AED implementation: Potential medical professionals to
provide advisement on the program include emergency medicine
physicians, occupational health nurses and local or state EMS
professionals.
5)
Conduct Regular Equipment Maintenance
Checks. To prevent an AED from not working properly, ongoing
maintenance checks ensure the unit is correctly working.
“According to the American Heart Association, for each minute
that passes without CPR and proper defibrillation, the chance of
survival decreases 7 to 10 percent,” said David Bingham, Director
of AEDs and Training, Cintas. “By having an AED on site and by
ensuring that all are trained in its proper use, businesses can
help protect lives.”
The total Cintas AED program extends beyond the ReviveR AED unit
and is focused on all aspects of emergency response. In addition to
extensive CPR/AED training, the components of the ReviveR AED
program include site assessment by a health and safety expert and
periodic maintenance reviews of the ReviveR. The revolutionary
Cintas ReviveR View promotes the confidence for bystanders to take
action, step-by-step guidance on how to respond effectively.
