ARRIS Announces Next Generation Edge Product for Digital Video and
On-Demand Content Digital Multimedia Termination System (DMTS)
Combines Dense QAM and CMTS Functions to Deliver a Variety of
Digital Video Services on a Single Platform SUWANEE, Ga., April 26
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ARRIS today announced the introduction of
the ARRIS Q5(TM) DMTS, the industry's first Digital Multimedia
Termination System (DMTS). The DMTS is a new class of edge network
device that will enable simultaneous delivery of today's MPEG- 2TS
and DVB-C based digital video content and emerging next-generation
DOCSIS(R) based IP digital multimedia content and signaling. The
ARRIS Q5 DMTS couples ARRIS high performance QAM and
DOCSIS/Euro-DOCSIS 2.0 CMTS technologies with integral multiplexing
features to create a product tailored for a wide variety of digital
multimedia service delivery applications. Linking these
technologies allows the ARRIS Q5 DMTS to produce a dynamically
allocated multiplex of digital video broadcast, Video on Demand
(VoD), IP Multicast, IP Unicast and DOCSIS data content that is
compatible with a variety of MPEG-2 and IP Set-Top Boxes along with
IP-enabled consumer devices. "Digital multimedia delivery is
rapidly moving into a phase where proprietary video delivery
architectures must seamlessly operate in parallel with emerging IP
multimedia architectures, such as those based upon the DOCSIS
Set-Top Gateway and PacketCable(TM) Multimedia specifications,"
stated Jim Lakin, President, ARRIS Broadband. "ARRIS brings its
established expertise and leadership in high performance,
standards-based voice and data products to enable advanced
multimedia services such as Video on Demand on multiple client
platforms." Deploying the ARRIS Q5 DMTS will allow cable operators
to lower capital costs and protect their investment by leveraging
existing IP transport and switching resources at headends and hubs.
The Q5 DMTS' integral multiplexing for MPEG-2TS / DVB-C video, IP
video, and DOCSIS/Euro-DOCSIS data traffic, supports a flexible
suite of digital video services over a single HFC transport device.
The integrated downstream multiplexer and block converted QAM
channels also provide a migration path for emerging "Wideband"
high-speed data applications that demand maximum data rates in
excess of those provided by a single downstream channel (38 Mbps
for DOCSIS, 50 Mbps for Euro-DOCSIS). The ARRIS Q5 DMTS is a 2 RU
device configured with 4 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) WAN ports with a
1:1 WAN redundancy option, along with a fully flexible mix of up to
6 HFC transport modules. These modules are the Dual Quad QAM module
and the Quad Upstream DOCSIS/Euro-DOCSIS module that enable a wide
variety of user-defined configurations. Supported configurations
include any combination of 8 to 48 independently provisioned MPEG
transport downstream channels in 4 block converted channel
groupings, as well as up to 24 DOCSIS 2.0 downstream channels and
12 independently mappable DOCSIS/Euro-DOCSIS 2.0 upstream channels,
and a next generation "Phy-less" 24 upstream CMTS with GbE
downstream interface. The highly asymmetrical nature of the CMTS
function is ideally suited for the heavily downstream-dominated
traffic patterns found in multimedia traffic. User definable
configurations will allow multiple DOCSIS/Euro-DOCSIS MAC domains
to be enabled, allowing operators to perform load balancing for
optimum network utilization and simplified client device
management. Additional integrated features allow for DOCSIS Set-Top
Gateway (DSG) support as proprietary MPEG-2 architectures migrate
to open signaling standards. The ARRIS Q5 DMTS' integral Dense IP
Edge QAM provides industry- leading video stream density with a
peak capacity of up to 576 simultaneous CBR video streams delivered
to current generation MPEG-2 Set-Top Boxes. Support for the
"Phy-less" CMTS application allows utilization of downstream QAM
resources in a separate Q5 DMTS chassis for additional density and
flexibility in advanced architectures such as those with
centralized GbE switching. The ARRIS Q5 DMTS will be available for
trials in the 3rd quarter of 2004 with initial product shipments by
the end of 2004. Forward-looking statements: Certain information
