BIG TESCO DEAL FOR CHRISTIAN SALVESEN

Tesco has extended its existing relationship with Christian Salvesen PLC by
awarding a new, 10-year contract, worth #260 million, to manage and further
develop the No1 retailer's national network of recycling services units
(RSUs).

The network handles all of Tesco's loose equipment and recycling needs, along
with numerous non-core but essential supply chain functions.

Amongst the key activities undertaken by Salvesen's Support Services Division
is the management and control of the supermarket chain's returnable transit
packaging (RTP) tray fleet, which makes more than 170 million trips each year.

Using returning delivery vehicles, Tesco's 10 RSU depots recover from the
supply chain significant quantities of packaging waste, which is then
consolidated and carried to recycling facilities. During the contract period,
the depots will process more than 5.5 million fully laden vehicles, each visit
taking fewer than 20 minutes.

Roy Attenborough, Salvesen's Support Services director, said the size and
duration of the contract confirmed Tesco's real and long-term commitment to
the environment, as well as its desire to achieve minimum costs through
maximum use of assets.

"This contract is extremely important to Christian Salvesen," he added, "and
we are very happy to continue our relationship with Tesco for the provision of
these vital supply chain support services. We have a number of exciting new
initiatives under way and will continue to work with Tesco and their suppliers
to increase efficiencies and seek cost saving opportunities.

"A 10-year contract is a huge vote of confidence for our quality systems,
management and workforce. Everyone in the division is totally committed to
justifying Tesco's decision."

Alex Laffey, head of Tesco's Non-DC (Distribution Centre) Operations, said: "
We have awarded this contract to Christian Salvesen because of their expertise
and proven track record within this specialised area of support service
operations. It also demonstrates Tesco's long-term commitment to the
environment, recycling and business efficiency."
