Bell Atlantic Makes Long Distance 'Checklist' Filing
                           In Massachusetts

Bell Atlantic today made a filing with the Massachusetts Department of
Telecommunications and Energy (DTE) demonstrating that the company has met
federal and state requirements to provide long distance service by opening its
local exchange network in accordance with the 14-point checklist of the
Telecommunications Act of 1996.

The DTE is expected to consider Bell Atlantic's filing over the next 90 days.
Following the DTE review, the company expects to file with the Federal
Communications Commission, which must act within 90 days.

The Massachusetts state filing is the latest development in three key Bell
Atlantic states:

- On April 14, the company made its checklist filing with the New York Public
Service Commission (NYPSC). Public hearings are scheduled to conclude on
   June 24.

- On May 3, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission approved a plan for
third-party testing of Bell Atlantic's operating support systems (OSS) by
KPMG, which performed the New York OSS test. The Pennysylvania test plan
includes provisions for testing elements of New Jersey's OSS as well.

Bell Atlantic plans to make its New York filing with the Federal Communications
Commission around mid-year, and to file applications for Massachusetts,
Pennsylvania and New Jersey later this year.
