SINGAPORE--Singapore Airlines Ltd. (C6L.SG) will resume nonstop
flights to New York in October, using the latest variant of the
Airbus SE (AIR.FR) A350 jets.
The Singapore flag carrier, which stopped the world's longest
commercial flights in 2013, will fly daily to Newark Liberty
International Airport from Oct. 18, the company said in a
statement. The flight will take up to 18 hours 45 minutes.
Qatar Airways currently operates the longest nonstop flight,
flying from Auckland to Doha in 18 hours and 20 minutes on a Boeing
Co. (BA) 777-200LR jet.
Singapore Airlines will use the A350-900ULR, or ultra-long
range, jets on the route. It has seven such jets on order from
Airbus and was the first airline to order the variant. The carrier
will offer business and premium-economy classes on the jets.
Earlier, the airline had configured its A340-500 planes in a
pure business class layout with 100 seats for the route. Those
planes were returned to Airbus as their high fuel consumption hurt
the economics of the nonstop flights, preferred by business
travelers to save time. Singapore Airlines currently flies to New
York's JFK Airport with a stop at Frankfurt.
Singapore Airlines said it will also add nonstop flights to Los
Angeles with the A350-900ULR jets.
