Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC (RR.LN) said Monday that more than
two-thirds of the 1.4 billion pounds ($1.85 billion) it spent on
research and development last year went to improving the
environmental performance of its products.
The British aviation engineering company said it made progress
in lowering carbon-dioxide emissions per passenger kilometer by 75%
by 2050.
"With significant forecasted growth in passenger demand it is
critical that we continue to develop new engine technologies that
meet customer's expectations for efficiency," Rolls-Royce said.
The Trent 7000 engine that went into service this year delivers
10% better fuel-efficiency than the engine it is designed the
replace, Rolls-Royce said.
Looking forward, the company said it continues to research
electric aircraft flight and will launch graduate and
apprentinceship programs in the field.
