LONDON--Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. (IMP.JO) said Wednesday
that it has received demands from workers at its Rustenburg mine
for a wage increase over and above the one they received to end a
six-week strike at the mine in February.
The workers have also requested that an annual pay increase is
brought forward from July 1 to the end of April, Impala said in a
statement. "We are in discussion with them on this these demands,"
it said.
The new demands come as violent strikes at South African mines
have severely disrupted platinum production, caused a national
political scandal and resulted in at least 44 deaths.
The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, a
breakaway union that has played a major role in recent strikes at
South African platinum mines, such as Lonmin PLC's (LMI.LN)
Marikana facility, said it was not responsible for the fresh
demands.
Impala reported a drop in full-year earnings last month due in
large part to the six-week strike that cut into its production and
revenue generation.
