OPEL International Brings Solar Power to Medicine Hat, Alberta
June 16 2008 - 11:34AM
Marketwired
SHELTON, CONNECTICUT and TORONTO, ONTARIO ("OPEL" or "the
Company"), a leading global developer and supplier of concentrating
photovoltaic panels (CPVs), today announced that it has signed an
agreement for a new solar installation in the City of Medicine Hat,
Alberta.
The 5 kW system will use Opel's state-of-the-art Mark I high
concentration photovoltaic panels, combined with the OPEL-FEiNA
dual axis trackers, and the SUNERGY CPV Inverter supplied by
Sustainable Energy Technologies (TSX VENTURE: STG). Funding for the
installation has been secured from the city of Medicine Hat.
Procurement for the installation is set to begin immediately,
enabling operational testing during the important summer
season.
"With the highest solar radiation in Canada, Medicine Hat is an
ideal location for a concentrated PV installation, " said Robert
Malton, Business Development Manager for Opel International. " We
applaud the Province of Alberta and the City of Medicine Hat for
their leadership and commitment to renewable energy and the
development of the solar industry. This trial will lay the
framework for future policies and deployments of solar."
The City of Medicine Hat, which owns and operates its own
electrical utility, is exploring a variety of renewable energy
technologies to expand its power generation portfolio.
"This high concentration photovoltaic installation will help us
understand the viability of adopting this technology on a larger
scale in the future," said Russell Smith, manager of the city's
environmental management division. "Opel and Sustainable Energy
have approached the project with unique technologies that bring
tangible benefits to system level performance and economics."
