STATESVILLE, N.C., Nov. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Iredell Transmission LLC, which began operation of its landfill gas-to-electricity project at the Iredell County Landfill in August, expects to produce its 10,000th megawatt hour of electricity by the end of 2008, DTE Biomass Energy officials said today. DTE Biomass Energy, the parent company of Iredell Transmission, has nearly 25 projects across the United States that convert landfill gas into some form of useable energy. At the Iredell landfill, two Caterpillar engines are used to generate enough electricity to power more than 3,000 homes. The electricity generated at the site is sold to EnergyUnited for distribution to its customers. "This project is another example of converting methane -- one of the most harmful greenhouse gases -- into a product that will help serve the energy needs of North Carolina in a safe, environmentally responsible way," said Mark Cousino, DTE Biomass Energy president. "We've been a leader in the landfill gas industry since 1988 and look forward to continuing our commitment to environmental stewardship both here in North Carolina and across the country." This is the company's fourth project in North Carolina. DTE Biomass Energy develops, owns and operates landfill gas-to-energy projects and forms strategic partnerships to leverage its expertise with that of others. The company's projects annually collect significant amounts of methane that otherwise would escape to the atmosphere. Since 1995, the company has collected more than 300 billion cubic feet of landfill gas, which is approximately 50 percent methane and 50 percent carbon dioxide. Headquartered in Ann Arbor, Mich., DTE Biomass Energy is a subsidiary of DTE Energy, a Detroit-based diversified energy company involved in the development and management of energy-related businesses and services nationwide. DTE Energy's operating units include Detroit Edison, an electric utility serving 2.2 million customers in Southeastern Michigan, MichCon, a natural gas utility serving 1.3 million customers in Michigan and other non-utility, energy businesses focused on power and industrial projects, coal and gas midstream, unconventional gas production and energy trading.
