JACKSON, Mich., Dec. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Employees of Consumers Energy and CMS Energy and the philanthropic foundations for both companies have donated nearly $130,000 to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief efforts. After Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast, the Consumers Energy Foundation announced to employees that it would match their hurricane relief donations to the Red Cross in September. The philanthropic arm of CMS Energy, the CMS Energy Foundation, made an immediate donation of $10,000. The employee donations totaled close to $60,000 and the Consumers Energy Foundation matched that amount this month with a check to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. "The generosity of our employees who saw the destruction and human toll of the hurricanes was overwhelming. Employees stepped up and gave from their hearts to help others whose lives were torn apart by these natural disasters," said David Mengebier, president of the CMS Energy and Consumers Energy Foundations. The Consumers Energy Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Consumers Energy. It provides funding to areas including education, the environment, Michigan growth and enhancement, culture and the arts, social services, and emerging issues. Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy, provides natural gas and electricity to more than six million of Michigan's nearly 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
