Steamy Weather Pushes Customer Demand For Electricity to Second Monthly Record on Consumers Energy's System JACKSON, Mich., June 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Michigan residents cranked up the air conditioners to escape Monday's heat and humidity, pushing customer demand for electricity on Consumers Energy's system to a second record high for June, the utility announced today. According to preliminary data, the total load on the utility's system hit a record monthly peak of 8,327 megawatts between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Monday. That eclipsed the previous monthly record of 7,802 megawatts, which was set on June 9. Before June 9, the peak record for customer demand in June was 7,777 megawatts, which came on June 25, 2002. The record peak came close to the all-time peak for customer demand on the Consumers Energy system, 8,347 megawatts, set on Aug. 7, 2001. A megawatt is a million watts or 1,000 kilowatts. That's enough electricity to power about 10,000 100-watt light bulbs. Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy, provides natural gas and electricity to more than six million of the state's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
