The cumulative return of the group stands at a positive 0.089 percent. Dragging the average lower, the Nikkei shed 170.6 points overnight to close at its lowest level since August 18 as it was making its second (and ultimately successful) major attempt to hurdle the 10,000 level. On the week, the index lost 4.34 percent, but is still higher by 18.51 percent for 2003. While the earnings calendar appears to have taken a cold shower, economic data races ahead at a feverish pace. Most of the data will be released before the market opens. The parade starts at 8:30 a.m. with October Producer Price Index to come in unchanged versus the 0.3 percent rise in September. Pulling out food and energy, the October Producer Price Core Index is seen rising by 0.1 percent compared to an unchanged reading in the prior month. October Retail and Food Sales are seen declining by 0.1 on the heels of a 0.2 percent drop in September. Pull auto sales out of the mix and sales are actually expected to have risen by 0.2 percent, declining slightly from the 0.3 percent rise last month. The key figure to watch for, which is neither estimated nor headlined in the media, is the sale number less gasoline and auto sales. This is a more accurate reading of the health of the consumer. At 9:00 a.m., Federal Reserve Chairman Greenspan gives the opening remarks at the International Research Forum on Monetary Policy conference in Washington. Any comments on the economy and interest rates will have to be carefully crafted. Finally at 9:45 a.m., in what will only be a futile exercise in redundancy, the University of Michigan November Preliminary Consumer Sentiment Index will be released to subscribers. It is currently seen at 91.0, improving over the final October number of 89.6. Be prepared for the investing week ahead with Bernie Schaeffer's FREE Monday Morning Outlook.
