PORTLAND, Maine, Feb. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Energy East
Corporation (NYSE:EAS) today announced the following financial
results. Earnings per share, basic for the 12 months ended December
31, 2007, were $1.62 while earnings per share, basic for the
quarter ended December 31, 2007, were 47 cents. Earnings per share,
basic for the 12 months ended December 31, 2007, decreased 15 cents
as compared to earnings per share, basic for the 12 months ended
December 31, 2006, of $1.77. Major factors in the year over year
earnings decline included: -- Electric margins that declined 40
cents primarily as a result of an adverse electric rate decision by
the New York Public Service Commission for New York State Electric
& Gas Corporation, which became effective January 1, 2007. --
Higher average shares outstanding as a result of the issuance of 10
million shares of common stock in the spring of 2007 that lowered
earnings per share 9 cents. -- Merger-related costs that totaled 6
cents per share. Those items were partially offset by: -- Lower
interest costs that added 13 cents. -- Lower income taxes of 14
cents, reflecting actual 2006 tax expense as filed and favorable
variances in recurring flow-through items. -- Lower storm and bad
debt costs that improved earnings 11 cents and 5 cents,
respectively. Earnings per share, basic for the fourth quarter of
2007 were 6 cents lower than fourth quarter 2006 earnings of 53
cents per share. The decrease was primarily due to lower electric
margins of 12 cents per share, partially offset by higher natural
gas margins of 7 cents per share. Consolidated Statements of Income
and Energy Distribution and Weather Statistics are presented on the
following pages. On February 29, 2008, Energy East will file its
