ENDESA Starts up Its Biggest Wind Farm Complex in Spain

Business Wire
ENDESA (NYSE:ELE): -- The wind farm complex, located in the region
of Galicia, has installed capacity of 161 MW and delivers energy to
the grid via the Tesouro substation in As Pontes (La Coruna) --
Investment in the project totalled over Euro 150 million. -- This
is a new operational model for the group compared to the previous
system under which smaller farms were managed separately. By
operating these installations in a coordinated fashion Endesa will
be able to optimise the management of the complex. -- The
integrated operation and management of the plants will increase
availability at the installations, thereby increasing their joint
production. The Carballeira wind farm, constructed by ENDESA
(NYSE:ELE) subsidiary, Endesa Cogeneracion y Renovables (ECYR), has
been connected to the grid. This completes the construction of the
group's largest wind farm complex, which also includes the Bustelo
and Faladoira plants, located in the area of As Pontes (A Coruna)
and Xermade (Lugo). The wind farm complex has total installed
capacity of 161 MW and is connected to the grid through via the
Tesouro substation in As Pontes. The Carballeira wind farm, the
last to be completed, has installed capacity of 24.42 MW, with 37
660kW wind turbines expected to produce 65,580 MW of energy a year.
This would supply the consumption needs of 13,780 households and
reduce crude imports by 100,125 barrels. Investment in the Tesouro
project totalled over Euro 150 million and the bulk of the goods
and services required for the project were acquired locally through
several supply companies established in the region under the
supervision of Endesa. This wind farm complex is a new operational
model for the group compared to the previous system under which
smaller farms were managed separately. By operating these
installations in a coordinated fashion Endesa will be able to
optimise the management of the complex, thereby improving the
predictability of production. This latter concept -which is the
guarantee of a specified volume of power generated over a
determined period- is the biggest challenge facing the wind energy
sector in the near future. The integrated operation and management
of the complex will increase availability at the plants, increasing
their joint production. Endesa's aim is to contribute to the
development of this energy source and to the development of Galicia
in general by building additional installed capacity of more than
800 MW over the next five years. This will come on top of the 600
MW of capacity envisaged in the current Wind Energy Plan - already
at an advanced stage of development. Endesa has turned As Pontes
and its surroundings into the first big power generation centre in
Spain. The project is also an example of the Company's policy to
diversify its energy mix and minimise the environmental impact of
its plants. Today, Endesa has capacity of 1,400 MW in coal-fired
plant and 60 MW of hydro capacity, with a further 800 MW of CCGT
capacity coming on stream shortly - in addition to the 161 MW of
wind power capacity. * This document may contain certain
