Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship Aids Climate Fight

Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG) today announced that this
year’s Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship is carbon
neutral, marking the third consecutive year the company has taken
measures to offset the approximately 1,400 metric tons of
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the tournament. The
week-long Senior Players Championship will be held Oct. 4-10, 2010,
at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Potomac, Md.
“Our commitment to making the Senior Players Championship a
carbon-neutral event is an extension of our long-term goal to
reduce emissions and support investment in clean energy at both the
local and national level,” said Mayo A. Shattuck III, chairman,
president and chief executive officer of Constellation Energy.
“This tournament represents another opportunity to demonstrate the
benefits of using renewable energy, efficiency and other innovative
energy solutions to minimize our impact on the environment and take
meaningful steps to address climate change.”
Constellation Energy is taking a series of steps to make this
year’s event carbon neutral, including:
- Offsetting direct, event-related GHG
emissions by purchasing and retiring Regional Greenhouse Gas
Initiative (RGGI) allowances from the state of Maryland, which will
invest the proceeds in energy efficiency and electricity programs
serving low-income residents.
- Matching indirect, event-related GHG
emissions by purchasing and retiring National Green-e Energy Wind
renewable energy certificates (RECs), which help to encourage
investment in new sources of renewable energy.
- Using biodiesel to power generators at
all facilities along the course.
- Recycling all carpeting in tents and
hospitality suites, as well as plastic and cardboard from
concessions and other tournament uses.
Combined, these actions represent the equivalent of saving
150,000 gallons of gasoline, making 240 cars emissions-free for a
year or eliminating the annual electricity use of 175 homes.
“The PGA TOUR applauds Constellation Energy’s resolve to reduce
our carbon footprint and demonstrate to golf fans everywhere that
we all have a responsibility to protect our environment,” said Tim
Finchem, commissioner of the PGA TOUR. “This tournament has been a
pioneer in promoting carbon-neutral responsibility and is an
example for others to follow.”
In 2008, the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship
became the first carbon-neutral event on the Champions Tour. In
2007, the tournament was the first PGA TOUR or Champions Tour event
to be powered by 100 percent clean, renewable energy.
