Versant Manages Complex Data for Award Winning Jefferson County
System Linux-Based System Keeps Track of Millions of
Inter-Relationships Between Addresses and Parcels FREMONT, Calif.,
Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Versant Corporation
(NASDAQ:VSNT), an industry leader in specialized data management
and data persistence software today announced that it is being used
in the Award winning ENDOR (Encoded Neighborhood Data Object
Repository) application, a geospatial information system (GIS)
built and delivered by Jefferson County Information Systems Group.
ENDOR is a component-based Java architecture running in a Linux
environment. This system unifies spatial data from the county's
Esri ArcInfo GIS software and tabular data from DB2 and Informix
databases. It keeps track of the county's 220,000 parcels and
350,000 addresses. This enterprise application is now widely used
by numerous departments including the County Assessor, Planning
& Zoning, Building, Animal Control, Sheriff and Social
Services. "When we designed this system we chose Versant for its
powerful object-oriented database," said Martin Hartley, Technical
Manager. "We needed to build a Parcel Object component that would
maintain both spatial and tabular data while tracking spatial
changes over time to provide historical versioning as well as
provide the ability to view changes to parcel geometry/attributes.
This historical data is critical in land use and property
assessment. We chose Versant and its object technology based on
price and performance, support of Linux, and their compatibility
with BEA WLI." With this system the county links a variety of
information to the parcel address and then augments that data with
historical data. Because all data is persisted in the Versant
object database the county can make spatial objects persistent as
ready-to-use actual objects and avoid the overhead in dealing with
object-to-relational methods. "Geographical applications with
complex relationships are ideal for our data management solutions,"
said Nick Ordon, president and chief executive officer of Versant.
"We are pleased with how Jefferson County is trailblazing what
other local and state governments can realize using object-oriented
systems to cut costs and deliver better information to their
officials and residents. " About Jefferson County Jefferson County
