Offers New Metrics to Support Service Providers; Presents
Validation That Botnets Now Primary Source of Spam CUPERTINO,
Calif., June 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Trend Micro Incorporated
(NASDAQ:TMIC)(TSE:4704), a leader in network antivirus and Internet
content security software and services, today announced that Dave
Rand, CTO of Trend Micro Internet Content Security is to speak at
the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group general meeting being held
this week in Brussels, Belgium. Speaking on the topic of Internet
misuse, Rand will discuss whether Internet service providers are
taking big enough steps to help stop the spam abuse. Through the
meeting, Trend Micro is looking to escalate with Internet service
providers, awareness of the spam problem, and provide information
on appropriate actions that can be taken to help curtail the issue.
Spam is evolving and Trend Micro research indicates that spammers
are now not driven by the desire to damage technology; rather they
look to borrow technology in order to make money fraudulently.
Trend Micro research estimates that 80 percent of spam is now
distributed from hi-jacked computers infected with bots. The
Internet is a virtual representation of society, and just as
real-world crime often looks to monetary gain through wrong-doing,
so too does cybercrime. During the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working
Group meeting, Rand will detail the channels through which spam
propagates, and discuss metrics available to support service
providers looking to minimize spam on their networks. In support of
this, he will share data, which Trend Micro has collected through a
combination of sources, related to the distribution and prevalence
of spam, such as: -- Of spam distributed through Internet service
provider networks, 35 percent is through Chinese Internet service
providers. -- Of the 100 Internet service providers identified to
be passing spam, 50 percent of the measured volume comes through
the top 10 identified providers. Dave Rand came to Trend Micro in
June 2005, through the acquisition of reputation services
organization Kelkea where he was the founder and CEO. Prior to
Kelkea, Rand worked for a variety of companies including National
Semiconductor, Chips and Technologies, Novell, and Cisco. Rand also
co-founded AboveNet, the last tier-1 network on the Internet and
authored several internet standards -- his code running on millions
of platforms, worldwide. The Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group
comprises representatives from the Internet Service Provider
community, network operators and key technology organizations. The
group is focused on tackling the threat of messaging exploits and
abuse globally, through a combination of technology, industry
collaboration and public policy initiatives. About Trend Micro
