Redback Networks Inc. (Nasdaq:RBAK), a leading provider of
next-generation broadband networking systems, today announced that
Seednet, Taiwan's second largest Internet service provider, has
deployed the SmartEdge(R) Service Gateway platform for its next
generation converged broadband service network, which will provide
video, voice and advanced data services throughout Taiwan. "As a
broadband leader in Taiwan, Seednet has experienced tremendous
growth by adapting quickly to market needs and offering innovative
services," said Simon Williams, vice president of sales and
operations for the Asia Pacific region at Redback. "The SmartEdge
platform enables effective service delivery and provides the
network capacity and performance for current and future broadband
services." The next generation network will be used to enable
Seednet's IPTV, VoIP, and high speed Internet services for both
consumers and businesses. The IPTV service, Digital Family Center
(DFC), includes over 200 channels and combines both analog and
digital video programming. In addition to traditional broadcast
entertainment, DFC also includes personalized, on-demand video for
feature length films and television shows. Taiwan has extremely
advanced broadband services with consumer service speeds of up to
12 Mbps. The Taiwanese government initiated a nationwide broadband
adoption program called the e-Government project in June 2004. As
part of the initiative, the government has allocated NT$30 billion
to construct a nationwide broadband network. The project will be
deployed in phases which started in 2004 and will run to 2010.
