SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Kyphon Inc.
(NASDAQ:KYPH) today announced that it is supporting the
International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and the Foundation for
Osteoporosis Research and Education (FORE) to raise awareness about
osteoporosis and spinal fracture risk during World Osteoporosis Day
on Saturday, October 20, 2007. To view the Multimedia News Release,

awareness of ways to maintain healthy bones and fight bone
fracture, Kyphon is supporting the IOF on its year-long campaign
"Beat the Break: Know and Reduce Your Osteoporosis Risk" that will
launch on World Osteoporosis Day. Kyphon is spearheading a program
to raise up to $10,000 to support osteoporosis awareness. For each
unique click to http://www.kyphon.com/us/WOD, Kyphon will donate $1
to the IOF. "Kyphon is proud to be supporting the International
Osteoporosis Foundation's 'Beat the Break' campaign," said Richard
Mott, president and chief executive officer of Kyphon. "Since 1998,
Kyphon's balloon kyphoplasty procedure has been used to treat some
340,000 patients worldwide with spinal fractures primarily caused
by osteoporosis. Through our support of the IOF and other
organizations, we hope to bring about early detection of spinal
fractures caused by this disease so that patients can receive
appropriate treatment." As part of its local community efforts to
raise awareness of osteoporosis, Kyphon is funding free bone
density scanning at a Bone Fair on Saturday, October 20, 2007 from
9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time at the Events Center at St.
Mary's Cathedral, 1111 Gough St., San Francisco. The fair is
sponsored by American Bone Health, in partnership with FORE and the
University of California, San Francisco. In addition to the free
bone density scanning, Kyphon representatives will be at the fair
offering height measurement because loss of height can be an early
indication of spinal fractures caused by osteoporosis. For more
information about the event, contact FORE at 888-266-3015. Kyphon
is also supporting local and national awareness campaigns of
osteoporosis organizations around the globe such as the Irish
Osteoporosis Society (IOS), the Fundacion Hispana de Osteoporosis y
Enfermedades Metabolicas (FHOEMO) of Spain, and the Italian
Association for Patients with Osteoporosis (AECOS). In addition,
Kyphon is offering free osteoporosis patient education posters for
physicians' offices in countries across Europe. Osteoporosis, a
term that means "porous bones," is a disease in which bones become
weak and can easily break. It is known as "the silent disease"
because many of the estimated 75 million women and men in the
United States, Europe and Japan who suffer from osteoporosis do not
know they are losing bone mass until they experience a spine, hip
or wrist fracture. Of the 1.5 million fractures attributable to
osteoporosis that occur annually in the U.S., nearly half are
spinal fractures, according to the National Osteoporosis
Foundation. Kyphon markets medical devices that are used in
minimally invasive therapies for the treatment of spinal fractures
in order to improve the quality of life of those affected by spinal
fractures caused by osteoporosis and cancer. About Kyphon Inc.
