Former Wachovia Executive Joins Aflac Incorporated's Board of
Directors COLUMBUS, Ga., May 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gary
Thompson, retired executive vice president of Wachovia Corporation
in Atlanta, was elected to the Aflac Incorporated board of
directors at the company's annual shareholders meeting today.
Thompson, 58, is a retired chief executive officer with Georgia
Banking, Wachovia Bank, N.A. He served as executive vice president
from June 1995 through December 2004. Thompson also is on the board
of directors for Georgia Power Company, a subsidiary of the
Southern Company. Thompson's career began with Wachovia while he
was a student at Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C. He graduated
in 1968 with a degree in economics. Thompson oversaw the merger of
Wachovia Corp. and First Union banks in the spring of 2001. "Gary
brings a wealth of financial knowledge to our board. We welcome him
to the board and are looking forward to working with him for many
