   *Irish Life & Permanent announces senior management appointments

Tuesday 17th May 2005: The Group Chief Executive of Irish Life & Permanent plc,
David Went, has announced a number of changes to the Group's senior management
team.

Denis Casey has been appointed Chief Executive of permanent tsb, the Group's
banking business. Denis is currently Chief Executive of Irish Life (Retail).
Denis succeeds Brian McConnell who has opted to retire from the Group at the end
of June.

Kevin Murphy has been appointed Chief Executive of Irish Life (Retail). Kevin is
currently Chief Executive of Irish Life Investment Managers (ILIM).

Gerry Keenan has been appointed Chief Executive Irish Life Investment Managers
(ILIM). Gerry is currently Director of Investment Development at ILIM.

Speaking today, David Went said that the changes being made allow for the
broadening of the experience of senior executives in the context of the Group's
overall succession planning. It has been decided to bring forward Brian's
retirement - due in 2006 - to facilitate this process. "The task for each of the
incoming Chief Executives will be to develop the outstanding franchise that
their businesses currently enjoy and maintain the momentum. They have already
proven their abilities in their former positions and we look forward to similar
success in their new roles."

David Went paid tribute to Brian McConnell; "Brian has done a fantastic job at
the bank. In particular he consolidated the merger of Irish Permanent and TSB
Bank and positioned permanent tsb as the real competitive force in Irish
banking. He has developed and led an excellent management team over the past
three years and most recently, through the launch of the most competitive
products in Ireland, they have established a strong market position in current
accounts and credit cards. His contribution to the Group has been immense and
greatly appreciated. We wish him well in his retirement".
