currently trading diametrically opposed to their performance
yesterday at this time. Led by a charge lower in the Nikkei
overnight, none of the 15 markets that we track is currently
positive. The cumulative average return on the collective stands at
a minus 1.007 percent. Not much data out of our overseas business
partners at this time of the morning, so we resort to a statistic
out of Italy. Italian industrial sales rose 2.9 percent on a
seasonally adjusted basis in the month of August. Domestic sales
were up by 2.1 percent and international sales higher by 4.9
percent. Industrial sales rose 11 percent on the year in unadjusted
terms driven by a 16.9 percent increase in international demand.
Surveyed economists had forecast industrial orders would fall 1.2
percent on the month and rise by 2.5 percent on the year. The cat's
already out of the bag as far as today's economic calendar is
concerned. The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) Refinancing Index
for the week ending October 16 advanced by 10.6 percent. In the
prior week the index dropped by 14.2 percent to the lowest level in
five weeks. The MBA Purchase Index rose by 5.8 percent aiding the
Market Index to a 7.9 percent rise. Today's earnings calendar seems
to be the lengthiest of this week and could well alter the course
of today's trade. Be prepared for the investing week ahead with

DYNAMIC MARKET OPPORTUNITIES With the 2004 US budget deficit
rolling in at a hefty $413 billion, the last thing the US bank
balance needs is to get any sicker. But with winter around the
corner, that scenario looks distinctly possible. Thanks to some
negligent sanitation procedures at flu vaccine manufacturer
Chiron's plant in England, the US economy is staring at a $20
billion black hole -- a hole that was to be filled with Chiron's
Fluvirin drug. And now that Chiron's entire Fluvirin stock --
accounting for half of all flu vaccines -- has been pulled from the
US market, a professor at Harvard University says that's what it
will cost the US in healthcare expenses and absence associated with
the flu season. Before the Chiron debacle, almost two-thirds of US
companies had planned to make flu shots available to their
employees. Not any more. And this is important since a study by
human resources firm ComPsych Corp. found that 40% of folks who
don't get flu shots end up missing some time at work, compared with
just 20% who do get the flu jab. On a related topic, the US drug
sector suffered a blow, with the news that about 30 Canadian
Internet pharmacies have decided not to take any US orders for bulk
shipments of Canadian-based drugs and medicines. At a time when
healthcare costs are spiraling upwards sharply, the decision could
hardly come at a worse time. Apparently, the Canadians are worried
that the trend will lead to a supply crunch in Canada, as well as
putting inflationary pressure on the price controls that Canada has
in place. Receive incisive economic/market commentary, profitable
