Higher One, a technology and payment services company focused on
higher education, is pleased to announce the winners of its first
Money on My Mind video contest designed to reward students for
sharing their knowledge with their peers about how to tackle tough
financial problems.
The grand prize winner of $2000 is Lisett Roque, student at
Harrisburg Area Community College in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In
her winning entry, Lisett perceptively describes her biggest
financial challenges as disciplining herself to live on a budget
and avoiding tempting out-of-pocket expenses.
Lisett tells us in her video, “You have to realize that although
your friends may be going out every weekend, or your family may
want you to come on a big vacation, these are out-of-pocket
expenses and they add up quickly. Therefore the number one
challenge I face as a college student is finding the balance of
what is and is not necessary and how not to live beyond my
means.”
According to a study conducted by Higher One among 5,488
students nationwide, college students are seeking basic financial
management knowledge. To act upon these findings, Higher One
launched the Money on My Mind contest this fall, giving students
the opportunity to be rewarded for sharing their responsibility and
thoughtfulness about money challenges they face. The contest
invited students to submit a two-minute video describing their
current money management challenges, their strategies for
overcoming them while juggling school, work, family, and social
life—and finally, their advice for others experiencing similar
financial difficulties.
“Students are making national headlines as they begin to stand
up and take notice of their current and future financial
obligations,” said Mary Johnson, Financial Literacy and Consumer
Advocacy expert at Higher One. “It’s important now that we take a
productive and encouraging role by providing students with actual
tools and knowledge to set themselves up for financial stability
and success. Our goal with Money on My Mind was to help students
engage and influence their peers positively on the topic directly
via social media, and it has proven very effective.”
Second prize was awarded to Annette Torres of Seminole State
College in Florida and third prize was awarded to Ziomara Morales
of Cypress College in California. Ten cash prizes, ranging from
$100—$2000 were awarded and featured on the financial literacy blog
One For Your Money, and comments and discussions were encouraged.
The Money on My Mind contest was open to students who are served by
Higher One’s refund and payment services across the country. The
high volume of video submissions was judged on clarity and
completeness of responses, creativity, and overall quality.
Higher One believes that students are financially
responsible when given the necessary tools and can
successfully live within their means. To that end, Higher One
offers innovative student banking services based on choice. The
company has dedicated resources to financial literacy including its
Financial Intelligence online financial literacy course and the One
For Your Money blog dedicated to the fundamentals of finances for
college students. Most recently, Higher One launched its first
Financial Literacy Counts grant program, giving schools the
opportunity to receive funding for student awareness campaigns,
workshops, online financial literacy tools, and other activities
and resources that promote financial literacy and provide
opportunities for students to increase their personal financial
management skills and abilities.
