McAfee, Inc. (NYSE:MFE), the world’s largest dedicated digital security company, today announced expanded efforts as part of the company’s Initiative to Fight Cybercrime and in support of the 2010 National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

The efforts include the following:

  • McAfee Cares – Online Safety for Kids program with McAfee employees and channel partners volunteering and teaching children in schools about cybersafety and cybersecurity.
  • A new Cybercrime Grant to the National White Collar Crime Center to train law enforcement personnel across the U.S. in detecting, investigating, and apprehending cybercriminals.
  • Additions to the McAfee Cybercrime Advisory Council including a new chairperson to continue to advise McAfee on grants, Cybercrime Fighter Awards and other opportunities to fight cybercrime.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month is a comprehensive public awareness campaign organized by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) to educate consumers, schools, businesses and governments about the importance of computer security and encourage online safety practices.

“With online scams becoming harder to identify, especially for kids, we felt this was an important way to give back to the community,” said Dave DeWalt, president and chief executive officer of McAfee. “From years of serving on the front lines of fighting cybercrime, our employees have the experience to help kids and their parents become more knowledgeable on the issue, because this is a problem we must fight as a community.”

Announced in October 2008, the McAfee Initiative to Fight Cybercrime is a wide-ranging initiative aimed at closing critical gaps in the fight against cybercrime. The initiative is anchored by a multi-point plan that includes calls for action from law enforcement, academia, service providers, government, the security industry and society at large to deliver more effective investigations and prosecutions of cybercrime. McAfee Cares – Online Safety for Kids

McAfee employees will teach school children about using their computers and mobile devices safely and securely in its McAfee Cares – Online Safety for Kids program, part of the company’s support of National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Last year, McAfee piloted its cybersafety education program with employees volunteering and teaching in more than 100 schools and reaching more than 3,000 children. This fall, Online Safety for Kids expands to include more locations across North America as well as McAfee channel partners. Later this year, the program will expand to countries outside the U.S.

“Everyone should take the time to secure their computers and Internet connected devices, as well as educate others,” said Michael Kaiser, executive director of NCSA. “McAfee’s efforts for the month, such as its cyber kids program, demonstrate how a company can engage its employees in bringing much needed information for young people directly into the schools.”

Also new this year is an online safety portal, found at http://www.mcafee.com/onlinesafety, dedicated to the mission of K-12 cybersecurity education with teacher curriculum links, html buttons to link back to the site for 24x7 education and testimonials from employees, educators and parents involved in last year’s program.

McAfee is continually widening its reach to educate and protect Internet users with expanded online aids such as The Cybersafety Resource Portal (http://www.mcafee.com/cru) and the McAfee Security Advice Center (http://home.mcafee.com/AdviceCenter/). In January, McAfee announced a partnership with Facebook to provide jointly created security solutions and consumer friendly education materials to the more than 500 million Facebook users.

National White Collar Crime Center Receives Cybercrime Grant

Expanding its Cybercrime Grant program, McAfee has approved a grant to the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), a non-profit based in Virginia. The NW3C equips law enforcement around the world with training and tools to fight white collar crime and cybercrime.

McAfee Cybercrime Advisory Council Expansion

In addition to the grants, McAfee announced that Paul Kurtz has agreed to serve as chairperson of the McAfee Initiative to Fight Cybercrime Advisory Council. Kurtz, a managing partner at Good Harbor Consulting, advises clients on cyber-security and homeland security issues. He has served as the founding Executive Director of the Cyber Security Industry Alliance and was special assistant to the President on the White House's Homeland Security Council, where he was responsible for cyber and physical security.

“I’m honored McAfee has asked me to bring my knowledge and experience in cybersecurity to chair the McAfee Initiative to Fight Cybercrime Advisory Council,” said Kurtz. “I’m excited to collaborate with people who share my interest and are dedicated to combating this growing problem affecting homes, governments and companies throughout the world.”

Greg Garcia, a previous winner of the McAfee Cybercrime Fighter Award, has joined the council as well. He is currently an executive at Bank of America where he leads the bank’s relationships with public and private partners in cybersecurity and identity management. From 2006 to 2008, Garcia served as the first presidentially appointed Assistant Secretary for Cybersecurity and Communications in the Department of Homeland Security.
