KBR (NYSE: KBR) announced that its Building Group has been awarded an $87 million contract for the construction of the new Dental Sciences Building for the School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The new five-story, 216,000-square-foot Dental Sciences Building will include academic, research, pre-clinical and administrative spaces. Two existing buildings have been demolished at the site and renovations to three existing buildings are taking place during construction of the new facility.

“This project is part of a multiphase modernization program for the dental school and comes on the heels of the Building Group’s comprehensive renovation of the 1960s-vintage Brauer Hall,” said Mike Pierle, Vice President, KBR and the Building Group’s leader of higher education construction. “We are proud to partner with UNC and build upon our vast experience in the construction of higher education facilities.”

The project is designed to achieve LEED® Silver certification. Flad Architects is the architect of record. Construction on the project is currently under way and completion is scheduled in January 2012.
