IHS (NYSE: IHS) a leading global source of critical information and
insight, today announced that Alcoa was named the "Best of the
Best" among nine corporations and three public agencies recently
announced as winners of the 2009 ESS Excellence Awards. In its
third year, the awards program recognizes outstanding achievements
in environmental, health, safety (EH&S) and crisis management
for sustainability through best practices in the use of advanced
information technologies. Co-sponsored by digital media providers
Environmental-Expert.com and VertMarket's Oil & Gas Online, the
2009 ESS Excellence Awards were presented during a ceremony held at
ESS EXPO.09 this week in San Antonio.
Alcoa was honored as the 2009 "Best of the Best" winner based on
the outstanding results that its largest business, Global Primary
Products, achieved by implementing Essential Suite software from
IHS -- starting with the Essential Compliance Manager and Essential
Task Manager modules. Among Alcoa's accomplishments:
-- Deployed global system on schedule to 41 facilities in 9 countries in
only 17 months. Deployment cost was 24% below budget.
-- Implemented in 5 languages to serve 500+ users. Native languages
enable EH&S data gathering by operations staff.
-- Assured compliance with 526 permits across 245 governing bodies --
including 1224 rules, 8999 requirement citations.
-- Tracked 4300+ tasks -- met goal of assuring >85% completed on-schedule
and documented near misses.
Alcoa is now the only three-time ESS Excellence Award winner,
having also been recognized in 2006 for automating Title V
compliance and again in 2008 for simplifying ISO 14001
compliance.
At the ESS EXPO.09 celebration, IHS also recognized 2009 ESS
Excellence Award winners Aerojet, Cheniere Energy, Ford Motor
Company, Kuwait Oil Company, Nebraska Emergency Management Agency,
Nestlé Purina PetCare, New Brunswick Emergency Measures
Organization, Reynolds Packaging Group, SandRidge Energy, Spectra
Energy (which won two awards) and the U.S. Postal Inspection
Service.
"IHS congratulates Alcoa, and all of the 2009 ESS Excellence
Award winners, for their outstanding achievements," said IHS Vice
President, Environment, Scott Lockhart. "Organizations all around
the world are urgently seeking ways to achieve their sustainability
goals. The companies and agencies honored here are leading by
example, demonstrating how more effective information management
can transform EH&S into a powerful driver for efficiency and
business success."
