JOHANNESBURG--Lonmin PLC (LMI.LN) said Thursday that workers are
returning to its Marikana mine following the end of a nearly
six-week strike, but that production won't resume for a couple of
days.
The company said so far 77% of miners are at the mine and that
numbers should increase during the day. Miners won't go underground
immediately while safety procedures are followed.
A spokeswoman for the company said it will be "a couple of days"
before platinum output resumes.
Output has been stopped at the mine since 3,000 rock drill
operators went on strike and the mine closed. Violence related to
the strike left 45 dead.
Lonmin agreed to increase miner salaries between 11% and 22%
from the start of October to bring an end to the strike.
Elsewhere, workers at Anglo American Platinum Ltd. (AMS.JO)
remain on strike and the company has issued a warning to workers to
return in the coming days or be fired. Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI.JO) is
also trying to get 15,000 miners back to its KDC west mine, where
production has stopped.
