Government, industry and academic leaders must work together in
order for the nation to meet mounting energy challenges, according
to Thomas W. Hicks, deputy assistant secretary of the Navy and the
keynote speaker at Eaton Corporation’s symposium, Energy Evolution:
Transforming the Future of Power, today in San Diego.
“Collaboration is an essential component of our efforts to
achieve increased energy efficiency, energy independence and
security,” said Secretary Hicks. “The Department of Defense and the
Federal Government play a critical role, but we also depend upon
the private sector, academia and regional leaders like the City of
San Diego as catalysts of innovation and solutions. Conferences and
symposia like the Energy Evolution series help advance that kind of
critical innovation.”
The event, fourth in a series of nationwide events, was hosted
by diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation (NYSE:ETN)
as part of its continuing effort to provide leaders from the public
sector and industry with the tools they need to navigate rapidly
evolving needs for improved energy management. It was held at Joan
Kroc Institute of Peace and Justice of the University of San Diego
campus. The conference focused on high-performance green buildings,
alternative energy, hybrid vehicles and energy efficiency.
Secretary Hicks provided regional business leaders, as well as a
cross section of regional university and government officials, with
an inside perspective of federal energy management challenges and
solutions based upon his experience within the Department of the
Navy. A series of in-depth breakout sessions included moderators
and panelists with expertise in -- and special passion for --
successful energy management programs.
“San Diego and the State of California are market leaders in the
development and implementation of holistic energy efficiency
solutions, and Eaton is proud to be part of this effort,” said
Jerry R. Whitaker, president of Eaton’s Electrical Sector, Americas
Region, who opened the session. “By bringing together industry,
academic and regional leaders, this symposium has provided a
dynamic forum for sharing ideas and forging the collaborative
relationships that will create a true energy efficiency
culture.”
Tony Haymet, vice chair and co-founder, CleanTech San Diego, and
director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, offered closing
remarks.
