Plug In Carolina today announced it has selected diversified
industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation (NYSE:ETN) to supply and
support a network of public electric vehicle (EV) “re-fueling”
stations in eight South Carolina cities. The implementation of the
charging network is underway to support the variety of new EVs
entering the roadways. The project was previously awarded to
another firm but has been reassigned to Eaton as they have the
ability to meet the immediate needs of the project.
The project, which launched June 15, 2010, is funded by two
state grants secured through the South Carolina Energy Office and
features a family of charging stations with multi-port
configuration, these are user friendly and lends themselves to a
cost-effective electrical installation. The stations will be
deployed in Greenville, Spartanburg, Blythewood, Columbia,
Charleston, Rock Hill, Union, and Myrtle Beach, at key re-fueling
hubs in each city.
“We are thrilled that Eaton was in a position to step up and
ensure that this important green transportation initiative stays on
track,” said James Poch, Plug In Carolina executive director. “With
their help, we look forward to positioning South Carolina as one of
the first EV ready states in the country.”
The program will provide publicly accessible EV charging
stations at locations such as municipal parking garages, public
streets and retailers. Depending on host city requirements, the
stations will be enabled for smart communications to facilitate the
monitoring and management of the state-wide network of
chargers.
“This is a perfect opportunity for Eaton to demonstrate its
commitment and capabilities to support the development of charging
electrical infrastructures that will assist Electric Vehicle
drivers to confidently go about their daily business, without being
overly concerned about how they will charge their vehicles ” said
Rich Stinson, president, Power Distribution Operations – Americas,
Eaton’s Electrical Sector. “We’re eager to provide Eaton’s
comprehensive solutions to ensure that Plug In Carolina’s public
electric vehicle program continues to move forward in a timely
manner and continue to support the communities in South
Carolina.”

technologies that help customers reduce their impact on the
environment. For more than 20 years, Eaton has developed electrical
