Conagra Foods Inc. (CAG) has begun some selective hiring with a focus on beefing up its sales force, Gary Rodkin, chief executive of the food company, said Monday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the WSJ CEO Council, Rodkin said the maker of Hunt's sauces and Healthy Choice meals is increasing its jobs "slightly, yes, but not in a big way."

He said Conagra is primarily hiring salespersons where is sees the best returns.

The company has begun to lower prices on some products, Rodkin said, as high input costs begin to roll off. It's also being forced to lower the prices on some items that compete heavily with retailers' store brands so that the price gap is "acceptable."

"We're very much focused on making sure our price-value is right," Rodkin said.
